Crispy egg rolls are a great side dish or filling snack all ages in your family will love! An egg roll consists of healthy ingredients and protein which is great if you are looking for healthy and tasty food to munch on.
However, the usual way of cooking an egg roll which is deep frying it to make it crispy is not really the ideal healthy option since you will be using a lot of oil which adds unnecessary saturated fats.
In this recipe, we will cook egg rolls using an air fryer which barely uses any oil at all so you can feel guilt-free when eating these! The best part? The air fryer cooking time is way quicker than deep frying!
With that said, here is how you can make homemade egg rolls with an air fryer.
How to make egg rolls in the air fryer
This recipe will require you to use an additional cooking pan or skillet for cooking the ingredients to be put inside the egg roll wrapper. But do not worry because this recipe does not require you to deep fry your egg rolls to make them crunchy and crispy!
Ingredients:
- Egg roll wrappers (this recipe is perfect for 5 to 6 egg roll wrappers)
- 1 teaspoon of olive oil
- 3 cups of shredded cabbage
- 1/4 cup of shredded carrot or coleslaw mix
- 1.5 teaspoon of sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons of grated ginger
- 1 clove of minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon of soy sauce
- 2 sliced green onions
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
Instructions:
First, get your frying pan and preheat it for a few minutes on medium heat.
Add the sesame oil, ginger, garlic, cabbage, and shredded carrot to the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until the cabbage has wilted.
After, add the green onions, soy sauce, and black pepper to the pan. Stir and remove from heat.
Assemble and make your egg rolls with your cooked ingredients. The post below will explain how to wrap an egg roll in detail.
Brush the olive oil over the top of the egg rolls or you can also use cooking spray.
Brush the olive oil or spray cooking spray on the basket of the air fryer.
Transfer the egg rolls in a single layer in the air fryer basket with the seam side down. Arrange egg rolls in the basket so that they do not touch each other.
Air fry at 360 degrees F for 7 minutes. Flip the egg rolls and cook for an additional 2 minutes or until the egg rolls are golden brown and crispy.
How to wrap an egg roll
To wrap an egg roll, place the wrapper on a plate or cutting board with one corner towards you – you will want the shape to be like a diamond.
Place 2 tablespoons of filling (the cooked ingredients from the frying pan) in the bottom third of the wrapper.
Roll up the bottom corner of the diamond so that it goes up and over the filling. Stop at the center of the wrapper.
Fold the left side of the wrapper to cover the center then fold the right side of the wrapper to cover the left fold.
Starting from the bottom, roll the egg roll upwards and away from you like a burrito. Stop until just the top point of the wrapper is exposed.
Seal the top point of the egg roll with water and fold it down. Seal the sides of the egg rolls with some water or a beaten egg.
Now just repeat the process with the rest of your egg rolls 🙂
More notes and tips for the best air fryer egg rolls
Egg rolls in general are very fun to make! And with an air fryer, everything makes things easier because you do not have to monitor the egg rolls that much unlike deep frying.
- You can experiment with the filling of your egg rolls and add meat. You can try chicken egg rolls, pork egg rolls, beef egg rolls, etc. You will just need to cook the meat before placing it in the wrapper.
- You can also make and freeze egg rolls in advance and pre-roll them then store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 12 hours so that they are already ready for air frying the next day.
- Double-check to see that the egg rolls are sealed so that the filling does not spill out while cooking.
- Do not overcrowd the egg rolls so that the hot air in the air fryer can circulate around the egg rolls to cook them all evenly. Make sure they aren’t touching each other. Cook in batches if necessary.
