What is a sheet pan for cooking?

A sheet pan is a wide and shallow baking pan usually made from aluminum or stainless steel and is used in an oven. A sheet pan is one of the most versatile and multifunctional pieces of bakeware since it can be used for different types of dishes, pastries, and goodies including bread rolls, cookies, pizzas, and more. You can also use a sheet pan to roast meats, vegetables, and other savory foods. But its purpose does not only stop there. Sheet pans can also become cooling racks which is perfect for foods like bacon.

To identify the best sheet pan, you should go for aluminum and stainless ones since nonstick ones can break down over time. However, if that does not bother you, then feel free to choose nonstick pans. Additionally, you should choose a pan with a heavy-duty gauge meaning the thickness of the metal used in the pan. So the higher the gauge, the better. Ideally, about 13 to 18 gauges will already do you fine.

How do you make a sheet pan dinner?

Making sheet pan dinners is definitely a more convenient and low-maintenance way of preparing a hearty meal. You only need to do a simple prep and an easier cleanup. Since a sheet pan can cook anything ranging from different proteins such as chicken, shrimp, pork, fish, to different vegetables, you can freely whip up a healthy and satisfying meal with your favorite recipes in mind.

To start, you need to choose a rimmed, heavy-duty gauge sheet pan and spray it with non-stick cooking spray. The next step is to choose your set of foods that can range from chicken breasts or thighs, pork chops, shrimp, salmon, cuts of beef, and more. Feel free to also add your favorite vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, and more.

However, do note that thicker vegetables like potatoes and carrots tent to take much longer to cook than tender ones such as tomatoes so it is best to roast the thicker veggies for about 30 minutes earlier before adding the other vegetables. A tip is to coat your vegetables with oil beforehand so that it will not dry out while cooking. Another key to cooking on a sheet pan is to add ingredients gradually just as what you did with the vegetables.

If you are achieving a crispy coating to your breaded chicken or shrimp, it is best to use a wire rack to raise the breaded ingredients above the moisture of the pan.

Sheet pan dinners

If you do not have much time to cook a fulfilling dinner, then opting for a sheet pan dinner is your best choice. This is an easier and low-maintenance (lesser tools used so easier cleanup!) method in making dinner with your favorite food! Since sheet pans can take on most ingredients and type of food, you can still whip up your favorite roasted chicken or a healthy plant-based dinner.
