What can I make with pumpkin?
The fall season is finally here and we know what means, right? Lots and lots of pumpkins! Pumpkins (especially during this season) are often used as a traditional Halloween decoration or a Thanksgiving pie filling. But did you know that the flesh of the pumpkin provides several health benefits? So yes, don’t let your pumpkins go to waste! Pumpkins are a superfood which is rich in vitamins and minerals. Pumpkins also help in regulating blood pressure and are good for the heart. Pumpkins also help in preventing and controlling diabetes and blood sugar levels. And if you are on a weight loss journey, pumpkins are also perfect for your diet because they are low in calories and a great source of fiber which helps suppress your appetite.
Another good thing is that pumpkins are very tasty and versatile which means that they can go along with almost all food and can be prepared in several forms. How do you prepare a pumpkin?
Now that you have all these ideas on what dishes to make with pumpkins, the question is: How do you cook or prepare them? Preparing a pumpkin is actually not terrifying as it looks like. You really just need to follow a few steps. But before we delve into that, you must first take note of the right pumpkins that are better suited to use for recipes. It is best to look for pie pumpkins or sugar pumpkins which are smaller and sweeter pumpkins that the larger pumpkins used for carvings and decorations.
Directions:
Scrub the outside of the pumpkin to remove any visible dirt.
Cut off the stem then cut the pumpkin in half (from top to bottom). Use a spoon to scrape out any fibers and seeds.
Cut the pumpkin halves into smaller pieces then place the pieces in a shallow baking dish with a lid – their skin side up.
Add water to cover the bottom of the dish then cover tightly.
Bake in 325ºF (165°C) oven for about 1 hour, or until the pumpkin is fork-tender.
Let it cool then cut off the peel or scoop out the flesh of the pumpkin, and serve.
