This Salisbury steak recipe is very easy to make and can be cooked in just 15 minutes!

Ingredients:

For Salisbury steak:

  • 500g/ 1 pound of ground beef, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 beef bouillon cube , crumbled
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs or any bread crumbs
  • 1/2 onion (white, brown, or yellow)
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tsp Dijon mustard OR 2 tsp of dry mustard powder

For Mushroom Gravy:

  • 3 tbsp of all purpose flour (or plain)
  • 2 cups beef broth / stock , low sodium
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 5 oz/150g mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 30g / 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

We will first start with making the easy Salisbury steak. Place the breadcrumbs in a bowl and use a grater to grate the onion over the breadcrumbs. Mix everything using your hands and leave to soak for a few minutes.

Add all the remaining ingredients for Salisbury Steak into the large bowl. Use your hands again to mix everything until combined.

Continue mixing for a couple of minutes until the mixture turns “pasty” – this is where you can be sure that your beef patties will hold well together while cooking.

Divide your patty mixture into 5 and pat very firmly and form into oval patties.

To start cooking your patties, heat oil in a skillet over high heat then add the steaks in and cook one side for 1 minute or until browned, then gently flip and cook the other side until brown.

Once cooked and browned, move them onto a plate.

Now, for the gravy mix. You can add a few more oil if you want then add the chopped onions and garlic and cook for 2 minutes until onions are a bit translucent.

Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until golden.

Turn down the heat to medium and add butter and melt. Once melted, add the flour and cook for 30 seconds while stirring constantly.

Add in the beef broth gradually, stirring while doing so. Once the mixture is mostly lump free, whisk in the remaining ingredients given for Mushroom Gravy.

Add the steaks to the skillet and cook for 5 to 7 minutes or until the gravy is thickened. Make sure you occasionally stir the gravy around the steaks.

Serve the steaks on the plate and top it with your mushroom gravy.
