Benefits of Citrus Fruits

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what about citrus fruits? Citrus fruits include lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit and other hybrids and varieties. And just like any kind of fruit, citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C that strengthens the immune system, as well as fiber. Additionally, they also have helpful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Early research also claims that citrus fruits could help lower blood pressure and cancer risk.

Aside from the health benefits, another advantage of citrus fruits is that they are a good ingredient to have in most dishes where you want to add that needed extra flavor.

How to Prepare Citrus Fruits

Aside from peeling its skin off, there are also different ways on how you can prepare citrus fruits especially if you want to incorporate them in your recipe. First and foremost, you would want to pick the fruits that are in good condition. Pick the ones that are blemish-free and feel heavy for their size. Depending on how you want to use them, citrus fruits with thinner and smoother skin are easier to juice while the fruits with thicker and rougher skin are best for zesting.

Zesting. If your recipe requires you to zest your fruit, then you may want to remove the zest first as opposed to doing it the other way around.

Juicing. For juicing, you will just have to go with the quick, traditional way which is to squeeze the fruit and use a filter beneath it.

If you won’t be eating the fruits immediately, you will have to store them at room temperature. If you want to preserve your citrus fruits, you can do several food preservation methods including freezing, drying, canning, and more.
