So, put on your apron, and let’s start cooking!

Ingredients:

16 oz of fresh Chinese egg noodles

1 lb chicken breast or chicken thighs, cut into bite-size pieces

2 ½ cups stir fry vegetables (carrots, broccoli, and any of your preferred vegetables)

1 stalk scallion – chopped

2 teaspoons toasted white sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Lo mein sauce:

½ cup chicken broth or vegetable stock

1 ½ Tablespoons dark soy sauce

1 ½ Tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

2 Tablespoons oyster sauce

1 teaspoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

1 teaspoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon ginger, grated

3 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions:

First, let us make the Lo Mein sauce. Add all the ingredients for the lo mein sauce in a medium-sized bowl.

Stir all the ingredients together until the sugar dissolves.

Set the sauce aside. Next is to marinate the chicken.

Marinate the chicken with one tablespoon of the lo mein sauce you made.

Slice your vegetables into 2-inch pieces.

The next step is to boil the noodles until they are al dente. Around 1 or 2 minutes should be fine or follow according to package instructions.

Rinse the noodles under cold water and drizzle a tiny amount of oil to prevent the noodles from sticking. Set aside the noodles.

Heat a wok or pan over medium-high heat and add the oil. Add the chicken and cook until it is browned and fully cooked. Remove from the pan and set it aside.

Add the vegetables to the wok or pan and stir fry for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender but crispy.

Add the cooked noodles and sauce to the wok or pan along with the vegetables and toss to combine for 1 to 2 minutes.

Add the chicken to your noodles and combine together. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

Serve.

More tips and notes for the best chicken lo mein noodles

I can assure you that this recipe is even better than the restaurant version. However, it does not mean that the whole cooking process can only be done by an expert chef.

In fact, this recipe is pretty hard to mess up – it’s that easy! But, if you want to make sure that you get the best results, I have here more tips and notes for the best chicken lo mein noodles and their savory sauce!

  • This recipe is so versatile and easy to customize to your liking. With that said, you can use a wide array of vegetables and spices that you prefer.
  • If you want a little spice to your lo mein, you can add in a pinch of red pepper flakes or drizzle some sriracha or chili garlic sauce.
  • If you do not have Chinese egg noodles, you can use spaghetti pasta, linguine, or fettuccine.
  • Make sure to not overcook the noodles because overcooked noodles can become mushy when stir-frying in the skillet. Rinse them with cold water after cooking to prevent the noodles from sticking.
  • You can use any vegetables to stir fry but if you want some recommendations, you can use onions, mushrooms, peas, red bell peppers, and carrots.
  • You can also use beef, pork, fried tofu, or shrimp as a substitute for chicken.
  • To make sure that everything is cooked evenly and at the same time, slice the veggies and chicken into similar, small-sized pieces.
  • Chicken lo mein is best served immediately while it is still hot and fresh since this dish tends to lose its texture if left out to sit and cool for too long.

What to serve with chicken lo mein

This dish is already pretty satiating and rich in flavor which makes it perfect to it by itself. But, if you want something to pair this dish with, then I have here some recommendations:

How to store and reheat chicken lo mein leftovers

If you have any chicken lo mein leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can freeze them for up to one month but I do not recommend freezing the noodles since they can turn mushy when you thaw them.

To reheat your chicken lo mein leftovers, just put them back in a pan, add a bit of cooking oil, and cook. Or microwave them for a couple of minutes until warm.

What is the difference between chow mein and lo mein?

It is understandable that people may confuse chow mein and lo mein since they are both Chinese noodles that are also stir-fried with vegetables and meat. However, chow mein and lo mein are two completely different dishes.

The main difference would be that chow mein uses crispy, fried noodles that are crunchy in texture while lo mein uses boiled Chinese egg noodles that are thicker and has a chewy texture.

The cooking technique is also different since chow mein noodles are usually stir-fried in high heat which makes the noodles crispier while lo mein noodles are boiled before stir-frying.

Personally, as someone who is monitoring her diet, I prefer lo mein since chow mein requires a bit more oil in cooking which is something I want to avoid.
